Egg Custard, Ipoh

Ipoh is food haven to a lot of people. Besides from its famous taugeh chicken rice, ipoh hor fun, and the dimsum, I notice another attraction would be the egg custard.

A small coffee shop by name of House of Mirror (Tian CHun), serve one of the best egg custard. One can savour for some satay too...which i mean pork, and intestine satay..

The soft and mild sweet egg custard is smooth when you put in your mouth. The bitter sweet caramel added some taste to the bland egg custard but was so well balance on your tongue. Something i definately will ask you to taste..

Do note that the caramel standard is not well define as I tried twice and I notice it come with different sweetness and sometime a bit bitter due to overcooked. Anyway, it still taste good...

Red Wine Mee Sua @ Sitiawan

As for this post, I won't be blogging about foods around KL/Selangor, but a local Foo Chow delicacy from Sitiawan, a delicacy that most Sitiawan people working outstation (especially foo chow origins) could not run away from, the Red Wine Mee Sua.

This picture is taken in my own house, prepared by myself. As for ingredients, it would be preferably kampung chicken, as they somehow do not have the weird smell of the chickens we usually get from Hypermarket, the red wine, and hand-made mee sua from Sitiawan. Now, this is my habit of preparing the delicacy.

First, you stir-fried onions with sesame oil (to enhance the fragrance of the red wine(in this case, we use the paste as well). Then add in the chickens and stir-fried until it look cooked. Then, add in the red wine. I would usually add in one or two tablespoonful for the taste. When the fragrant of the red wine became stronger, add in hot water to turn it into soup. Then prepare the hand-made mee sua with another pot. Just make sure the water is boiling before adding in the mee sua. Once the mee sua seems translucent and is seem floating at the top, its ready to be served. Add in the soup on top of the mee sua, and the meal is ready :).

Although the post above is a home-made version, there are several place in Sitiawan serving this delicacies, such as Lido Restaurant behind The Store Supermarket and Bei King Restaurant. That would be the only places I knew serving this delicacy. However, I never tried it at these places, thus, try at your own risk :)

Pun Chun Restaurant, Bidor

Knock knock knock....

Is 2011..............

and to kick start my new year, I went to Cameron Highland with a bunch of crazy colleague....On the journey from KL to Cameron, we stop by at Bidor, for its ever famous Duck noodles.

Among the few famous shop, we decided to settle down at Pun Chun restaurant although they have a branch in Klang Valley nowadays.

Pun Chun is famous for its Duck noodles and Woo Kok (Fried Yam filled with char siew). Most of the patron are local who stop by for a plate of wan tan mee. Since our mission is Duck noodles, we order 4 plate of noodles and 5 woo kok to be share by 5 person.

The duck noodles cost RM 6.80 which come with a plate of noodles with dark soy sauce and a bowl of steamy hot duck soup. The duck soup is cook using various herb and it taste like normal Chinese chicken herbal soup. The duck is surprisingly tender and juicy after hours of cooking. The noodles is springy but is just OK for my liking....Sorry, I am not a 'wan tan mee' person...hehe

The woo kok is extremely good....I could say one of the best i ever tasted. The yam was smooth and the char siew blend very well with the pastry....yummy....Thumb up...I will definitely stop over again the next time I pass by Bidor...

***by the way, the auntie selling the duck noodles are quite unfriendly though....

Restaurant Sun Mee Foong, Tanjung Tualang

During the recent visit to Kampar, I have the chance to taste the well known ‘fresh water prawn’ of Tanjung Tualang.

We ended up in Restaurant Sun Mee Foong, which was made famous by food review show in Astro and some famous blogger.

The restaurant is so famous that we are supposed to make reservation before we arrive. As we didn’t do that, we face the consequences of waiting for more than an hour before the first dish was served to us. There are buses of full loaded tourist making a stop for lunch here and caused the restaurant to be jammed up and congested.

A few aquariums full of ‘big head’ prawn are sighted in front of the shop. So after I go for a walk, snapping few photograph and drink cups and cups of tea, we finally able to taste the food there.

First we were serve with Kangkung Belacan…The kangkung was not crunchy and watery and the taste is mediocre for me.

Second the soy sauce fried prawn was served. The prawn was in need juicy, crunchy and fresh. However the soy sauce was just too salty for me. However, everyone like it so much. We call the small prawn as we have 12 people. The boss advice us to take the small prawn as it was sweeter and nicer to be fried.

Third, came the fried sotong. The sotong wasn’t ‘Q’ enough but was superbly crunchy. The thai sweet and spicy sauce add extra kick to the sotong goreng….

Claypot taufu come next. It was just mediocre and there is room for improvement.

Next come the Thai sauce fried fish. The crunchy fish rest below the sweet and spicy sauce is just perfect to be eaten with white rice. Thumb up…thumb up….

Next, the ever famous steam prawn was served. The average size prawn is so fresh and the meat was so tender and juicy. The Chinese liquor make the dishes just perfect for me. The prawn also come with ‘har kao’ that I suck it out from the prawn head. In deed it was high in cholesterol but I couldn’t resist the fresh har kao dripping from the head of the prawn.

After finishing the dishes, we patiently waited for our last dish….We wait and wait…..and after 20 minutes passed, here come the sweet sour sauce steamed fish. I believed the boss have forgotten our order….hehe…By the time the fish was serve, we are actually too tired and too full to really enjoy it. But one word, perfect fish….

The total damage : our of our expectation. Cheap or expensive? You decide.
Fresh prawn 2 dishes (4 kati/2.4kg) - RM 140
Fish for 2 dishes (1.2kg) - RM 40
Claypot Taufu - RM 12
Kangkung - RM 8
Sotong - RM 16
Tea - RM 5
Peanut - RM 3.6
17 bowls of rice - RM 17
Total: RM241.60
