Chop Chung Wah, Jonker street

There is one scene in Jonker Street, Malacca that always caught people attention which is hundred of people queueing up for a plate of chicken rice bowl.

The shop was basically close by this iron bar and will only open if there is people finish up their meal and the owner will then allow certain number of people to come in. It will then be close until there is another group of person finish their meal.
Very 'Pah Pai' right? And look at how narrow is the road leading to the shop...Purposely park 2 motorcycle there....

So when we step in, the lady boss tell us, half chicken cheapest set priced at RM 28.80.....So we just simply say yes...

So here is the food.....Half kampung chicken and 5 plate of rice ball with 5 cute ball each. That is what the RM 28.80 set meant to be!!!

The chicken was rather dry but was sweet and have the 'Que' texture.

But the things that i would say stand out from other place is the rice ball.....The rice ball is so aromatic and I can just eat it without the chicken....The rice is handmake and that why it wasn't as compact as those 'very commercialise' chicken rice ball shop. One can still taste the rice although it was shaped to ping pong ball size. Yummy...

So next time you guys go to jonker Street, remember become 'Yau Kooi' like us....queue up for hours for this magical food...

Formosa Chicken Rice

I went to Malacca again on Christmas with bunch of crazy fella as I was craving for chicken rice ball. After a horrible jam in Malacca town, i almost fainted to see such a long queue in the famous jonker street chicken rice ball. Since my stomach is drumming very badly, we decided to drop off at Formosa instead.

Formosa being very much commercialised compare to other chicken rice around the town, offer wider range of food and drinks. The price is of course at a higher side compare to other stall in Malacca.

We order the famous steam chicken and rice ball, char siew, siew yok, wanton soup, chicken feet salad, and taugeh.

The chicken is tender and juicy but i tasted better steam chicken before.
The rice ball is so compact that it doesn't seem to be made out of rice. It feel like eating a dough thought.
The wanton soup is not to my liking as the wanton is small and the broth wasn't taste good. To me is merely a 3/10.

The cold chicken feet salad is also not to my liking. The cold chicken feet taste awful and got some smell on it.
The taugeh is good, but i still craving for Ipoh chicken rice taugeh.

Char Siew and Siew Yok is above average but not the best I have ever tasted.

Overall, it was just a decent lunch as I am super hungry at that moment. However, it does not satisfy my craving for Chicken Rice Ball....

Overall rating - 4/10

During our trip 4 of us order 2 slices of original crepe cake, 1 slice of mango crepe cake and 1 slice of chocolate crepe cake. Just see how many layers of crepe and creme per cake...
Original

MangoMango

ChocolateChocolate
Feeling not enough, we even breing back to KL, 17 slices of crepe cakes. We have no choice but to put into huge vacuum bag with lot of ice as crepe cake must be stored in cold environment. Not to forget crepe cake tend to lost the taste if it was not consume within 24 hours.

Other favourite of crepe cakes include green tea, rum raisin, and tiramisu.

If you like to chill for a while, enjoy a cup of coffee of your liking...

Ming Sate Hut - Malacca

Craving for sate babi? or pork intestine sate?

Head to Ming Sate Hut at Malacca nearby Mahkota Parade. Situated a few shop beside Nadeje Crepe Cake shop, Ming Sate Hut serve variety of sate from chicken to pork, intestine to lamb all under one roof.

The sauce is also very unique. Rather than the usual peanut sauce, the sauce in Ming Sate is cook with chunky pineapple that give the sweetness taste of the pineapple.

The chicken satay is nothing to shout about as other stall can simply serve the same standard as theirs.

The intestine sate is very unique indeed. There is no smelly taste or neither it was hard. The intestine was nicely bbq over the charcoal fire. Well, it was my first time eating intestine by way of BBQ...

The pork sate on the other side taste much better than the chicken version.

Nancy 's Kitchen

I was invited by a crazy bunch of colluegue to be the judge for WTF Challenge which stands for 'Where's the food'...Each participant are required to search for food that they never taste before and marks will be given based on the food, price, ambience as well as the presentation of the food itself.

Nancy Kitchen is located at Jalan Hang Lekir, which is off Jonker Street....very easy to locate the shop. Once have to queue up as the shoplot was rather small and can accomodate about 30 person at ground floor and another 40 person at upstair.

Among the dishes we order are as follows:

For started we opt for popiah and 1 set of Top Hat (Pie Tie)

For main course we order Pongteh babi, cincalok egg, 4 angle bean and otak otak serve with white steam rice.

The bill come at RM 61.50 which inclusive of 4 drinks.

The popiah and pie tie was extremely well done.

Pongteh babi was nice as well but a little too oily for my liking...

Cincalok egg was normal and turn up to be salty...But that is the way it should be since cincalok is salty in nature.

4 angle bean and otak otak was nothing to shout about.

Overall it was a decent meal....for the price that we pay, it was consider affortable..

Lastly i give the challenger 71 marks out of 100....not that bad after all....

Huang Chang Chicken Rice@Batu Berendam, Malacca

Malacca has always been famous for its chicken rice ball, the normal chicken rice rolled into a small round balls. However, there are 2 facts that we should know about Malacca chicken rice( that as what I was told about),
1) they are for breakfast, but tourists(like me) will take them to be lunch.
2) locals don't usually go to Jonker Street to have their chicken rice ball breakfast.

I had 2 chicken rice meals while I was in Malacca( for this trip), one of them is in tourist spot filled with pictures of artists from various country and big names who had visited the chicken rice shop.

One of my friend's personal favorite is this Huang Chang Chicken Rice Shop located in Batu Berendam, Taman Melaka Baru.

A long queue has formed outside the shop when we went there around 10am in the morning. My friend placed the order once we were seated. i was shocked when he ordered 40 rice balls and half a chicken(Hai Nan Chicken Rice) for the 3 of us. I was even more suprised when he mentioned that usually they took 20 rices balls per person. Then i realised the reason behind this 'massive portion'. Actually, the balls are not that big,

and it taste so good. Hand-made is always better than machines, as machine made chicken rice balls are much harder in texture-wise and the quality of hand-made chicken rice is certainly much better. Talking about rice, the Hainan chicken certainly can't be forgotten.

The texture are soft and tasty, and certainly much fresher compared to other Malacca famous chicken rice shops( the difference are rather obvious).

And one thing about this shop, the foods are rather economical.
Just Rm 8.50 for the half chicken and we spent lesser than RM20 for the 'breakfast' for 3.
I will definitely revisit Huang Chang the next time i am in Malacca.

p.s. : so sorry that there are limited pictures for this posting, the fragrance was too tempting.*smile*

Nadeje Patisserie Cafe@ Malacca

A trip to Malacca always focus on foods like 'satay celup' and 'chicken rice ball'. I am not excluded as well, until after I was taken to this cafe. With its blue sign( that was all i remembered, not the name, but the colour), Nadeje was actually quite famous among Malacca locals.

Actually, i still can't get the name pronounced correctly yet. As i can never remember addresses, I guess a pic on the name card will do.

Enough for introduction lets get to the main course. Nadeje is actually a cosy cafe specializing in selling only one type of cake, the mille crêpe. Mille crêpe is actually a type of French layer cake, which is thinly layered crust from eggs and creams(a layer of crust and a layer of cream). And it would be a bad idea to have the cake as take-away, as the texture will change if the cake was not kept refrigerated or cold enough.

the original mille crepes

A piece of green-tea mille crepes

Other than finding this idea of cake making refreshing, I do like the soft texture of the crepes a lot as well. Its like eating a mixture of ice-cream cakes with a slight taste of eggs( what else could you expect when it was layered with creams and egg crust?). But the taste of the cake was just nice( not too sweet and not too heavy). A piece of this crepes cost around RM6-7 a piece(as costly as cakes from Secret Recipe, but the texture are considerably much better). They also offer a variety of flavors, such as chocolates, strawberry, mocha and rum & raisins, just to name a few.

Not only the cakes, but other desserts are very tempting as well. They even prepare a glove-like cover for the pot to keep the tea warm. As this place is kinda famous, its not suprising to find the cafe crowded during tea-time around 3-4pm. Its definitely a must try for those visiting Malacca.

P.S: dear admin, hope that I am not doing too bad for my first post *smile*.
